Custom-coded websites: when bespoke development makes sense
A custom-coded website makes sense when its functions and workflows need a solution tailored to the project. That might mean a specific interface, CMS, business portal or integration with existing systems. More important than the technology name is understanding the problem you are paying to solve and how the website will be maintained.
All listed prices exclude VAT. The final scope and amount are stated in the quote.
What does custom development actually mean?
Separate design, content editing and business logic. An original design does not mean every component was written from scratch. Custom development often uses established libraries and services, and a WordPress website can also have its own theme and plugins.
| Project area | Example custom requirement |
|---|---|
| Interface | A configurator where one selection changes the available next options |
| CMS | Editors manage collections and promotions through business-specific fields |
| Workflow | A partner submits a request, sales approves it and the buyer sees its status |
| Integration | Exchanging product codes, stock levels and statuses with an existing system |
Ask for a functional description and acceptance criteria in the quote. “Custom website” without a specification says little about the work, control or support included.
When dedicated development can be justified
Consider it when the team repeatedly works around tool limitations: copying data, manually checking buyer permissions or doing the same task in several disconnected systems. Describe those steps and their frequency first, then compare an existing product, an adaptation and dedicated development.
A simple website with a few pages and no special functionality may not need a large custom system. WordPress or a simpler architecture might solve the task. Our website planning guide helps define the scope first.
A decision example: catalogue or B2B portal?
Illustrative scenario: a distributor initially needs a public catalogue with an inquiry form. In a later phase, business buyers need their own accounts, agreed price lists and order-status visibility. The catalogue and B2B portal are different scopes: the second phase requires access rules, pricing rules and data exchange to be defined.
Before development, establish which system is the source of truth for price and stock, what happens when an external system is unavailable and who handles failed synchronisation. These decisions affect cost more than screen appearance alone.
Our custom web shop development starts at €3,000, while a B2B platform with a custom CMS starts at €5,000, excluding VAT. These are starting levels for different scopes. Integrations and additional modules are specified in the individual quote.

How will you edit content?
Agree on what you edit yourself: pages, products, prices, translations or customer accounts. The CMS can be an existing product, a custom system or a combination with other services. Without that agreement, “easy content editing” remains an untested promise.
For concrete examples, see our demo store and custom CMS service. During a demonstration, try a task you will actually perform, including correcting a mistaken entry.
Speed, SEO and security need verification
Next.js is one possible technology, not a synonym for all custom development. Its documentation distinguishes server and client components. The chosen approach, content, integrations and hosting affect the result.
Ask for important content to be accessible to search engines, clear URLs, measurements of real pages and a data-access plan. Custom code is not automatically more secure or better for SEO. A public site with static pages may still use forms, a CMS and external services that need maintenance.
What to agree so you do not depend on one person
- Code and design usage rights, repository access and the handover process.
- Documentation for running, deploying, integrating and editing the site.
- A list of services, licences and accounts with their owners and costs.
- Backup, restoration and export procedures when changing providers.
- The difference between bug fixes, support and new functionality.
Code access matters, but documentation and access to the other systems determine how practical a handover to another team will be.
Start with the smallest useful phase
Choose a complete workflow that can be verified: a user submits a request, the responsible person processes it and the result appears in the agreed place. Decide what to measure — handling time, manual steps or entry errors — before promising savings.
In your custom development inquiry, describe the current process, the main problem and the systems to connect. That lets us propose phases and compare solutions for the same task.
